Happy Saturday –
Hope you’re enjoying your week. We’re doing something fun — heading to Atlanta to watch the Boston Red Sox play. My mom is a huge Red Sox fan, and this trip is her Mother’s Day present. I’m excited to spend the time with her and enjoy the game together.
Now… let’s talk about something every sewist has faced at least once.
Have you ever had a fabric or pattern intimidate you?
You love the fabric. You love the pattern. But something in the back of your mind whispers, What if it doesn’t turn out right?
Maybe the print feels too busy. Maybe you’re afraid of making a mistake. Maybe you just don’t want to “ruin” the fabric you fell in love with.
That was me with this fabric.
I’m pretty sure I bought it from Fabric Mart, but don’t quote me on that. What I do remember is how much I loved it the moment I saw it. I already had the pattern picked out and was completely charged up to sew it.
And then… I stalled.
No deadline. No pressure. Just fear of messing it up. So it sat in my stash. And sat. And sat.
The turning point
During a recent fabric‑stash clean‑out, I finally told myself:
This fabric is not doing you any good sitting here. You already spent the money. Use it.
So I pushed myself to cut it out and start sewing. I reminded myself:
- This is not a race
- Mistakes are part of the process
- If it doesn’t work out, it’s a learning experience
- No one will know if it’s a colossal failure except me
And honestly? That mindset shift made all the difference.
The challenges
This dress had a lot of gathering. Of course, my basting stitch broke while I was pulling it in, so I ended up gathering it by hand.
Then came the buttons.
Twelve of them.
Which meant twelve buttonholes — the part of a garment that can absolutely make or break the final look.
But I kept going. One step at a time.
The finish line
The dress was finally completed, and I wore it on Mother’s Day to church. I was genuinely pleased with how it turned out. More than that, I was reminded of why I sew:
- I love creating clothing that fits me
- I love having my own style
- I love the process, even when it challenges me

Your turn
Have you ever had a fabric or pattern intimidate you? Did you push through — or is it still sitting in your stash waiting for its moment?
I’d love to hear your story.
Happy Sewing,
Valerie
