✨ Pressing Tips That Make Every Sewing Project Look Better

Happy Saturday!

Ironing isn’t the most glamorous part of sewing, but it truly makes a huge difference. A well‑pressed seam can take your garments, quilts, or any sewing project from looking a little sloppy to looking beautifully made. Here are a few simple pressing habits that make all the difference.

🧺 Press After You Pre‑Wash

Once you wash and dry your fabric, give it a good press. This is also the moment you may discover whether the fabric is right for your project. I’ve bought fabric for a blouse before, only to realize after washing that it came out so wrinkled. That was my sign — I didn’t want to spend that much time pressing a shirt after every wash.

✂️ Press Every Seam as You Go

This one step alone can transform your work. Pressing each seam before moving on helps the fabric lay flat, which makes it easier to match up the next piece and keeps everything looking crisp and intentional.

🔧 Pressing Can Fix Mistakes

If you’ve ever sewn a tiny pucker or a slightly wavy seam, try pressing it out before ripping anything. You’d be surprised how often a little steam and pressure can smooth things out so no one ever knows the mistake was there.

🌡️ Use the Right Heat Setting

Always check that your iron is set to the correct temperature for your fabric. There’s nothing worse than scorching or melting a piece you’ve spent time cutting and preparing.

🧵 Use a Press Cloth When Needed

If there’s any chance of shine or scorching — especially with delicate or synthetic fabrics — use a press cloth. It’s a simple layer of protection that can save your project.

🛠️ My Two Favorite Pressing Tools

I keep my pressing tools simple, but these two make a big difference:

  • Tailor’s Ham — Perfect for pressing curves, especially sleeves and shaped seams.
  • Tailor’s Clapper — Helps flatten seams beautifully. Press with steam, then place the clapper on top to lock in that crisp finish.

Do you have any pressing tips or favorite tools? I’d love to hear what works for you.

Happy sewing, Valerie
