Cool weather, Penn State football, and a DIY project? Yes, please. This weekend we get to attend a Penn State game, and the cooler weather will be a nice change from what we’re used to here in Florida. I wanted a women’s white Penn State sweatshirt to wear later in the day, but I couldn’t find anything in the stores that fit my simple style. Most of what I saw was boxy and uni-sex. I really wanted something personal — something that fit me better.
So I bought a plain white pullover from Amazon and decided to make my own.
I embroidered the Penn State head on the front, and originally planned a double appliqué for the back. But during my test run, I realized the design wasn’t going to work. The double appliqué looked muddy, and the letters blended into the fabric instead of popping. That’s exactly why test stitch‑outs matter — they save time, frustration, and a whole lot of seam‑ripping.
I pulled out my Brother Scan’n Cut, added Ultra Hold adhesive to some Penn State fabric I already had, cut out the PSU letters, and applied them to the back. Normally this sticks well, but one letter refused to cooperate. I added a quilt stitch in white thread around all three letters to keep everything secure. The last thing I want is letters falling off at the game.
This whole project reminded me how important it is to always test your embroidery designs before committing to your final piece. It takes extra time, but it saves so much more in the long run
