The Small Sewing Habit That Changed My Week

Some days get away from me before I even realize it. I start with good intentions, a mental list of things I want to sew, and maybe even a project laid out on my table… but then life happens. Work, errands, dinner, family, the unexpected — and suddenly it’s late in the evening and I haven’t touched my sewing machine at all. It’s discouraging, especially when sewing is the thing that fills me up and helps me unwind.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve started a new habit that has completely changed how I feel about my sewing time: ten minutes a day.

Just ten minutes. That’s it.

It sounds almost too small to matter, but it’s become one of the most grounding parts of my day. On the busiest days — the ones where I’m stretched thin and creativity feels far away — I can still manage ten minutes. I can sew one seam, trim a few blocks, press a stack, or cut a strip. It’s not about finishing something big; it’s about keeping the thread of creativity alive.

And here’s the magic part: On the days when I do have more time, those ten minutes often turn into twenty… or forty… or a full, happy hour of sewing. Starting is the hardest part, and this tiny habit makes starting feel easy.

It’s amazing how a small commitment can shift your whole mindset. Instead of feeling behind or disappointed, I end each day knowing I touched my craft — even if only for a moment. It keeps my projects moving forward, but more importantly, it keeps my joy connected to my everyday life.

Ten minutes doesn’t sound like much, but it’s enough to remind me: I’m a sewist, even on my busiest days.

I’d love to hear from you — What small habit has changed your sewing life? Sometimes the tiniest shifts make the biggest difference.

Happy Sewing,

Valerie
