If you’re just starting to sew, it can feel overwhelming trying to figure out which tools you actually need. Over the years, I’ve learned that you don’t need a huge collection — just a handful of reliable gadgets that make everyday sewing easier, smoother, and a lot more enjoyable. These are the five tools I reach for every single day.
1. A Quality Pair of Fabric Scissors
A good pair of scissors is worth every penny. These should be used only on fabric — never paper, plastic, hair, or anything else. Cutting other materials will dull the blades quickly.
I bought my favorite pair at the Sewing Expo, and they sharpen them for free every year. If you share your sewing space with family, make sure they know your sewing scissors are off‑limits. Keep a cheap pair nearby for everyone else to use.
2. Straight Pins
Straight pins are essential for holding fabric in place, securing pattern pieces, and especially for working with slippery fabrics like silk.
A quick tip: try not to sew over your pins. It can break your needle and damage your machine. I prefer glass‑head pins because they’re heat‑resistant and easy to spot.
3. Magnetic Pin Cushion
If you’re anything like me, you end up with pins all over the floor while you’re sewing. A magnetic pin cushion makes cleanup fast and painless. Just sweep it across the floor and it picks everything up — no one wants to become the accidental pin cushion.
4. A 6-Inch Ruler
This little ruler is one of the most underrated sewing tools. It’s perfect for quickly marking hems, checking seam allowances, and making sure your needle is positioned exactly where you need it. I keep mine right beside my machine.
5. The Seam Ripper
Let’s be honest — some days I use my seam ripper more than my sewing machine. It’s a tool we all rely on, and once it becomes dull, it’s time to replace it. I recently found a website that sells them in bulk: wawak.com. It’s nice to always have a fresh one ready.
