Denim Skirt

Happy Saturday!

This is year, I am trying new projects that I have never done before.  It is so easy to fall into the same routine.  This usually equals boring and a miss opportunity to learn something new.

The fabric was purchased from Joann’s and it is has some stretch.  It is called Sew Classic Stretch Denim Fabric.  It is 70% cotton, 26% polyester and 2% spandex.  Fabrics that can stretch are my absolute favorite.  It is a medium weight and washed very well.  I have had denim fabric come out of the dryer in a crinkly ball.  I like to iron when sewing but I don’t want to do a lot of ironing for my clothes once they are made.

The pattern was well written and gave excellent fitting instructions.  It advertised the skirt can be completed in five hours, that did not happen.  The fly zipper was a first for me but with the instructions from the pattern it was non issue.  I used temporary glue spray to hold the zipper in place while finishing stitching of the zipper.  I also used Steam a Seam several times while making the skirt.  It was used on the waistband and in the hem.

The pockets were a lot of fun.  The pocket design was from Embroidery Library.  This was my most favorite part of the skirt.  It was fun to add the embroidery to my clothes.  The lining of the pocket was quilting fabric that I had left over from another project.

The topstitching was sewn with gold embroidery thread.  In order for the stitching to stand out, I used a 3.5 stitch instead of the 2.5 stitch.  The sewing machine had a denim needle and there were no issues with the machine stitching thru the fabric

With the beginning of a new year, what new projects have you started?
