Happy Saturday –
Hope you are staying warm. These temperatures are crazy especially for us Floridians. We are not set up for these temperatures. Our low on Sunday will be 19 degrees. Yikes! Stay warm!
This week I have been cutting the fabric for the Primrose quilt. Here is the picture of the quilt from the book Fat Quarter Style.

When shopping for fabric to sew this quilt, I had no idea how much cutting was involved. When reviewing the cutting instructions,I was a little discouraged. Then I added it up and it was 1,050 pieces. 😳 Note to self, read the cutting instructions before buying fabric.
Due to volume, I came up with a plan. Cut the largest pieces first then gradually work down to the smallest. This kept me from wasting fabric and coming to the end and not having enough.
To avoid waste, I cut multiple smaller squares from the scraps of the larger pieces . This kept waste down and will allow the fabric to go further.
Here is how I organized my cuts so I don’t lose my mind.
- The fat quarter pieces were pinned together for each flower.
- Labeled pieces with sticky and pinned together.
- Borders and binding were tied together with fabric selvage.
- Cuts that could not be pinned were put into sandwich bags and marked.

When you are sewing and using the same fabric you can easily use the wrong piece. These steps will help avoid that problem.
Once all the cuts are done, I put them all in a clear bin to keep everything together. Now everything is ready for me to start sewing.

How do you organize a quilt with a lot of pieces? Let me know if you have any tips. It can be helpful to hear other pointers.
Happy sewing,
Valerie
