Sewing Tips

Sewing is not about being Perfect

🧵 The Truth: Mistakes Happen to Every Sewist

Mistakes will happen — that’s just life, and it’s definitely part of sewing. I’ve cut fabric wrong and had to run back to the store for more. I’ve made pajamas with the animal print upside down. I forgot to check the direction of the penguins. The kids didn’t mind one bit. I’ve skipped pre‑washing fabric and watched it fall apart in the dryer. I’ve put buttonholes on the wrong side of a shirt. I’ve trimmed a garment too close and sliced a hole right through it.

I’ve even embroidered shirts for my husband’s workplace and accidentally put holes in two of his coworkers’ shirts. We embroidered right over them. From the outside, they looked fine. But, the inside looked like a thread war zone.

✨ “Should I Be Inspiring People to Sew?”

After reading all of that, you wonder whether I should be the one encouraging others to sew. But the answer is yes — because this is what real sewing looks like. Mistakes aren’t a sign that you shouldn’t sew; they’re proof that you are sewing.

💡 What Thomas Edison Can Teach Us About Sewing

Thomas Edison once said, “I didn’t fail. I just found 2,000 ways not to make a light bulb .” He only needed one way to make it work.

Sewing is the same. Every incorrect cut, every crooked seam, every “oops” moment teaches you something you’ll never forget. The next time, you won’t make that same mistake. And along the way, you’ll have plenty of successes — as long as you don’t give up.

🪡 Keep Going: Growth Comes From the Messy Parts

Anyone can quit. But to grow, you have to pick yourself up, dust off the threads, and keep learning. Every sewist you admire has a pile of failed projects somewhere — they just kept going.

💬 Share Your Sewing Mistakes

I’d love to hear some of your sewing mistakes. Sharing them helps newer sewists overcome their fears. It reminds all of us that perfection isn’t the goal. Progress is.

Happy Sewing,

Valerie
