How to Hem Fabrics with a Sewing Machine

Happy Saturday,

Hope you had a great week and enjoyed your Valentines Day. This week has been incredibly busy with traveling for work. It seems the first couple of months at the beginning of the year, fly by. I am looking forward to a slower weekend and enjoy some sewing therapy.

In my last previous posts, I have been writing about basic skills that are worth learning. You will use these skills over and over again. Today we are going to talk about putting in a hem with your machine. This is very quick process and provides a professional finish.

The easiest way to do the hem is to use your machine. This will provide a consistent stitch. Yes, you can do this by hand. Usually, this is the last step of my project. I can’t wait to start on my next project. Yes, you can use the straight stitch to hem. I usually use the straight stitch to hem when it is a casual outfit.

My foot came with the machine. If you do need to purchase the foot, it is worth it. This method is a time saver. You will be thanking me later. Ebay is a good way to find reasonable prices. I have recently found several used items which has saved me some serious cash.

Here is the picture of the foot for my machine.

Here are the steps you need to do.

  1. Press your desired hem width to the wrong side of your fabric.
  2. Measure to check it is the same width all the way around. You do not want a wavy hem.
  3. Take it to your machine. You are now ready to start hemming.
  4. Roll the hem under the fabric with only about 1/8 inch of the top of your hem showing.
  5. Set the foot down. Use your hand wheel. Ensure that the stitches grab the top of the hem and the skirt.
  6. Now start sewing but take your time. You want to make sure that needles catching the fabric.

Below is the video that hopefully will show the process.

Let me know if you have any question or concerns. This is a sewing skill that I have used over and over to finish off many of my sewing projects.

Happy Sewing,

Valerie
