Sewing Tips: Overcoming Mistakes with Embroidery

October 25, 2024

Happy Saturday,

We have had such a busy week. Our church had a conference every night. We had pastor from churches nationwide that attended. It was such a blessing. Now that the week is over, we are tired. I had grand plans of getting a little sewing in, but it didn’t work out.

This jacket from McCall’s was something that I was really eager to sewing. The fabric was such a great color for fall. It was a knit that was purchased from Fabric Mart. When I saw it in the store, it caught my eye, and I knew it was coming home with me.

The most difficult part was putting the center back edge together with the seam binding. I felt it was a little bulky. With some trimming and pressing, I managed to remove some of the bulkiness.

This pattern can be mostly sewn with the serger. I used the sewing machine for the staystitch, gathering and the hemming but everything else was the serger. Don’t forget when you are using the serger, the best colors to have is gray. This will keep you from always changing the colors on the serger.

Once the jacket was completed, I was pressing down on the seams and made a rookie mistake. The iron was too hot and burnt the corner of the jacket. I felt sick due to loss of fabric and time in the project.

Then I remembered seeing folks utilizing embroidery design to cover the imperfections on a garment. So, I went ahead and embroidered a single-color design on to the jacket to blend right in. No one was the wiser.

Couple of tips learned.

  • Always check the temperature of the iron and make sure it is appropriate for the fabric
  • If there is a mishap, there is usually a way to work around it.

Overall, I would sew this jacket again. The directions were written well. I really liked how the back of the jacket laid. Let me know of some creative ways that you have overcome a sewing Ops!

Happy Sewing

Valerie
