Happy Saturday –
I just wanted to discuss what I feel is the most important things to do before you start cutting and sewing. You were inspired by a beautiful outfit and thought “I can do this”. So, you run to the fabric store grab the fabric and start cutting out the pattern. Now the problems come, I don’t have enough or too much fabric, not all of my notions and the fabric shrunk after the first wear. Don’t let this be you.
Here are my tips –
Plan, so you found a pattern that you would like to sew. Turned the pattern over and read all the notions and the correct fabric needed for your size (don’t get goofy and plan for 10lb weight loss, go with your actual measurements). When you purchase fabric, go ahead, and make sure you have thread that matches. If you are not sure, buy the thread.
Wash your fabric. This is such an important tip. I have made multiple things but then went to wash it and the fabric shrunk or the fabric was so full of wrinkles that I never took the time to press it out again.
Press your fabric. Once you have taken it out of the wash, press it out. This will let you know if this is fabric that you want to work with before you spend your time. Press out your pattern pieces, this will help you make better cuts with your fabric.
Do you have any tips for beginning seamstress?
