Simplicity 8609 – Pleated Skirt

Happy Sunday!

It has been a rainy weekend in Florida.  This makes a great excuse to spend Saturday afternoon sewing.

My daughter wanted a pleated skirt before she heads back to college.  The fabric is from Joann’s.   I bought the  Stretch Chiffon Boho Floral on Gray.   It has 93% Polyester and 7% Spandex.   It has such a nice feel to it and there will be no need for ironing.   I was surprised on how much fabric we needed to do this skirt and we used every bit of it.

The pattern itself runs big.   We took probably took an additional 5 inches off of the skirt for it to fit correctly.  The directions were easy to follow. You will need to make sure that pleats are marked when you cut out the pattern.  It will save you a lot of time. The skirt  had five pieces.  It had the front, the front sides, the back and the side backs.

The skirt has a nice flow to it and she is so excited about the pockets.  It is the little things that make us happy.   I probably will make the skirt again but will use muslin first to ensure proper fitting.

What have you been sewing?

Valerie

    1. I am sorry that I didn’t see your question earlier. Yes, I have had issues putting in pleats. I have a tendency to speed sew. This is not effective. I had to really slow myself down and take time with pleats. My issue usually is not marking the fabric with the pleat marks. Once, I started making my fabric with the pleat and basting them in, the process became easier. If I have to adjust, I can easily take out the basting. Hope this helps.
