Sewing Tips

The Iron is your Friend

Happy Saturday!

Ironing makes a big difference with your projects.  It can take your garments, quilts or any sewing projects from looking sloppy to well made.

Here are several tips-

Once you wash and dry your fabric, press it out.  You may find that the fabric is not suitable for the project that you planned.  I have bought fabric for a blouse and the fabric came out so wrinkled.  I quickly realized that I would not want to spend that much time pressing out the shirt after each wash.

Press every time you make a seam.  It will make it easier to match up the next piece if the fabric is laying flat.

If you make a mistake, you may be able to press out the pucker and no one will be the wiser that there was a mistake on the project.

Make sure that the iron is set at the correct setting for the fabric.  There is nothing worse than burning your fabric because the iron was too hot.

Use a press cloth if there is a possibility of scorching the fabric.

Here are the two tools that I use when pressing.  I use a tailor’s ham and tailor’s clapper.  The tailor’s ham works great when pressing out the sleeves.  I also use the clapper to press out the flat seams.

Let me know if you have any tips.
