The Mystery of Putting in an Invisible Zipper

Happy Saturday!

I will show that there really is no mystery.   Once you do it, you will wonder why you have been avoiding this. You can practice this on scrap fabric, before actually putting it on a garment or a purse.

Three items that are needed invisible zipper, invisible zipper foot and wonder tape.  Joann’s does carry the invisible zipper and wonder tape.  The zipper foot, I bought from the local Viking dealer.  Check with you sewing machine dealer for this foot.  This can be done using a regular zipper foot.

Step 1 – Press out the zipper teeth.  The teeth on the invisible zipper curl, press the teeth out using a low setting with your iron.  Be careful, you do not want to melt the teeth of the zipper.

Step 2- Place the wonder tape on the right side of the zipper.   If you are using a 5/8 seam allowance, you will measure from the edge of your fabric to the zipper teeth.  Remove the top layer of the wonder tape and line up your zipper.  Even with the wonder tape on the zipper, you can easily manipulate until you get the correct measurement.

Step 3 – The invisible zipper foot, will need to run along the zipper teeth.  The foot has a pointed edge to push back the teeth while you are sewing.

Step 4 – Now switch to the other side, remove the top layer of the wonder tape, and line up your zipper for the 5/8 inch seam.

Congratulations! You have just installed an invisible zipper.  Go ahead and finish your project.  This method would be especially helpful when putting a zipper on a formal.
