I have five sewing tools that I use everyday. If you are just starting to sew, I highly recommend these gadgets.
You need a good pair of scissors. These scissors should be used on anything but fabric. It will dull your scissors. Make sure that you buy quality scissors, this is so worth the money. I bought mine at the Sewing Expo and I get them sharpened every year for free. You will need to let family know that your scissors cannot be used on paper, hair or cutting plastic. Try to have a cheap pair of scissors for them to use but not your sewing scissors.
Straight pins are necessary to cut out your patterns and to keep fabric in place while sewing, especially if you are working with silk. Try to never sew over your pins. It could break your needle. I like using glass head pins because they are heat resistant.
A magnetic pin cushion is a quick way to pick up your pins off of the floor. When I am sewing, I have pins all over the floor. When I am ready to clean up, I can quickly get them up with the magnetic. No one wants to be your pin cushion.
A 6 inch ruler. This helps you to quickly mark a hem or to make sure that your needle is in the exact spot that you need it in.
The seam ripper. There are days that I feel that I use the seam ripper more than the sewing machine. A seam ripper is a tool that once it is dull, replace it. I just found a website today that you can buy them in bulk. The website is wawak.com.
